Use the previous and next buttons to change the displayed slide Johnson and the legacy of these depictions for successive generations of postwar modern and contemporary artists, from Romare Bearden through to the current moment.īy taking a multidisciplinary approach that focuses on the connection between the history of art and the history of ideas, the exhibition will study aesthetic, political, social and racial issues as well as the realm of the imagination-all of which is revealed in the representation of black figures in visual arts from the French and American abolition eras to the present day.Ī carousel is a rotating set of images. In both New York and Paris, the exhibition explores the work of Manet’s Impressionist-era cohort, including Frédéric Bazille, Edgar Degas and the photographer Nadar sculptors including Charles Henri Joseph Cordier and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux paintings, drawings and prints of Henri Matisse (before and after his 1930s Harlem visits) the portraiture of diverse artists of the Harlem Renaissance, including Charles Alston and William H. In Paris, a broader and expanded treatment of the black figure begins with portaits by Marie-Guillemine Benoist and Jean-Louis André Théodore Géricault at the start of the 19 th century. We cannot have a conversation about modeling in the industry without the current fierce: Jourdan Dunn, Philomena Kwao, Joan Smalls, Liris Crosse, Leomie Anderson, Chanel Iman, Jodi Turner-Smith, Aweng Ade-Chuol, Cynthia Bailey, Duckie Thot, Adut Akech, Maria Borges, and Precious Lee.In New York, the presentation focuses specifically on the black female figure, beginning with Edouard Manet’s 1860s portrayals of Laure, the model who posed as the maid in Olympia. Honorable mentions to this list are the Black supermodels who continue shatter glass ceilings. We applaud them for not only being an inspiration to every little girl who reads fashion magazines but to all generations of fashion lovers, watchers, and creators alike who continue to thank them and cheer them on. We should also take the time to highlight those supermodels who are our pioneers – walking the runways that so many prejudiced naysayers told them they didn’t belong on, breaking barriers with each long-legged step.īelow is a list of our “super” supermodels who have shaken up the industry and shifted status quo. As the nation celebrates Black History Month there is no better opportunity to call this out. It’s been 25 years since I fell in love with fashion, and I still don’t always see models that reflect me or my culture. Not simply because of their fierce walks, inherent command of the runway, and regal presence – yasssss – but because they reminded me of how few and far between Black supermodels still are in the industry. Like many others, I was surprised and excited to see supermodel icons Beverly Johnson and Veronica Webb. Most recently was during the Sergio Hudson runway show during this month’s New York Fashion Week. While the industry has been making strides toward more diversity and inclusion, I often think about this. The lack of Black models was painfully evident and often confused me. What these magazines didn’t do, however, was show me how I as a Black woman fit into this fashion story. But these publications talked about them like household names and taught me their differences, signature looks, and historical context. No one in my immediate family wore labels like Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, or Gucci. ![]() I studied them because they were my gateway to labels and international fashion houses. After picking out my next hairstyle in the Black Sophisticate’s and/or Hype Hair magazines, I would turn to fashion flipping through the glossy pages of Vogue, Elle, and Marie Claire scouring the style sections and couture campaigns. I would sit for hours at Barnes & Noble‘s searching. Growing up I didn’t really see many Black women supermodels in fashion magazines. ![]() One of the most compelling sections of the sale will be Johnny Winter’s notebooks, handwritten in the late 1960s and ‘70s and filled page after page with songs he composed. So complete is this collection that it even includes a clump of Johnny’s actual beard with photos verifying the shearing.įor fans and collectors, there are many extremely rare rock and blues posters and vintage photographs documenting early appearances at clubs now long gone. Rings, necklaces, hats (sweat stains and all), belts, straps, scarves and more were trademarks of his style. On stage, Johnny Winter’s stiletto-thin frame was often draped in memorable outfits and customized accessories. These, and assorted wonderful vintage instruments, constitute the artist’s personal collection, which also includes the simple wooden ukulele-his very first guitar-that he is shown with around the age of ten in family photos. And though they appear almost toy-like, Winter’s three Lazer guitars gave some of the most powerful sounds of his career. Johnny also banged out song after song on his metal resonators, the instruments he affectionately called “garbage cans with strings,” some of which were uniquely crafted for him. Many vividly remember the musician’s love affair with Gibson’s uniquely shaped Firebirds, all five of which are in the sale, including the iconic instrument that Johnny played live with Muddy Waters. Johnny Winter is prominently included on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Greatest Guitarists, so of course no auction would be complete without his collection of three dozen guitars. At the time of his death in 2014, he was recording with Eric Clapton, Dr. King and Muddy Waters, and gave a spectacular performance at Woodstock. Many remember him for his distinct covers of songs including “Johnny B Goode” by Chuck Berry, and “Highway 61 Revisited” by Bob Dylan, as well as the original “Still Alive and Well” and “I’m Yours and I’m Hers.” Often accompanied by his brother Edgar, Johnny also shared the stage with his blues idols B.B. Secondly, I really appreciated that you can't get eliminated in the game. The wagering in the game is first of all very fun. If you, like me, have grown horribly sick of trivia games because you have played Trivial Pursuit far too often with people that can recall anything that they have ever read, then you can really appreciate this pro. The first pro to Wits and Wagers is that they have found questions that (most likely) nobody will actually know the answer to. At the end of the seventh question, whoever has the most chips is the winner. Whoever bet correctly gets the appropriate payout (anywhere from 2:1 to 6:1), and the person who provided that answer gets a bonus of 3 chips. All the answers are revealed, and then the players place their wagers on the answer(s) that they think are closest without going over (the players get to wager twice per round at no risk, but can also risk any chips they had previously earned to increase their potential winnings). In each question (which all have numerical answers), one person reads the question and then all of the players write down their best guess as to the correct answer (such as how many feet across is the Golden Gate bridge, or how many times could you fit the area of Rhode Island inside of Alaska). Each game consists of seven questions (there are 700 included in the game). More specifically, it is a party game that happens to use trivia as it's subject matter. Another game that I found interesting enough to finagle (ahem, "acquire") a copy of was Wits And Wagers. ![]() Color signature 1 is the default signature. Pixy can learn seven color signatures, numbered 1-7. It will then use this statistical model to find objects with similar color signatures in its frame from then on. Release the button and Pixy generates a statistical model of the colors contained in the object and stores them in flash. For example, the LED turns orange when an orange ball is placed directly in front of Pixy. While doing this, the RGB LED under the lens provides feedback regarding which object it is looking at directly. More specifically, you teach Pixy by holding the object in front of its lens while holding down the button located on top. Orange ball? Place the ball in front of Pixy and press the button. Purple dinosaur? Place the dinosaur in front of Pixy and press the button. Pixy is unique because you can physically teach it what you are interested in sensing. Or use Pixy without a microcontroller and use the digital or analog outputs to trigger events, switches, servos, etc. It’s possible to hook up multiple Pixys to your microcontroller - for example, a robot with 4 Pixys and 360 degrees of sensing. So your Arduino or other microcontroller can talk easily with Pixy and still have plenty of CPU available for other tasks. The information is available through one of several interfaces: UART serial, SPI, I2C, USB, or digital/analog output. ![]() purple dinosaur detected at x=54, y=103) to your microcontroller. And if the processor can keep up with the data, much of its processing power won’t be available for other tasks. But there are two drawbacks with image sensors: 1) they output lots of data, dozens of megabytes per second, and 2) processing this amount of data can overwhelm many processors. With the right algorithm, an image sensor can sense or detect practically anything. Vision (image) sensors are useful because they are so flexible. If you want your robot to perform a task such as picking up an object, chasing a ball, locating a charging station, etc., and you want a single sensor to help accomplish all of these tasks, then vision is your sensor. ![]() Of course, if you block attacks, you lose Drive gauge, and if you run out of Drive gauge, you’ll be in a Burnout state where you suffer more hitstun and blockstun. That bar still exists it’s now separate from your Drive Gauge. This allows you to use Drive Parries (a parry that uses up your Drive Gauge), pull off Drive Impacts (a hard-hitting move with armour that opens up opponents), use Drive Rush (a cancelling technique from a Parry or normal move), and pull off Overdrive moves (powered-up versions of special moves). ![]() You have a separate meter just below your health bar called the Drive Gauge. Street Fighter 6’s major mechanic, apart from it being a neutral-focused footsie-heavy 2D fighting game that rewards you for patience and planned offense, is its Drive mechanic. A Promising Combat System With Opportunities For Combat Expression There’s almost something for everyone, even absolute beginners since Luke and Ryu are catered towards them. While I personally would want at least one grappler in the mix, the closed beta roster did its job in enticing players to try all of them, from the defensive Guile to the savvy speed-laden Kimberly. If you hated fighting Ibuki in past Street Fighter games, you’ll hate Kimberly even more. Her spray cans are her “exploding ninja shurikens”, forcing opponents either to just block or move forward, inviting more pressure from her ninja tricks. She uses lots of speed and ninja shenanigans in her fights a typical match with Kimberly means if you don’t block correctly, you’ll be at the receiving end of a long juggle. ![]() Kimberly is clearly a fan of Final Fight/Street Fighter Alpha’s Guy and Street Fighter 5’s Zeku she has most of their moves and then some. He makes all other old drunken kung fu masters look bad with his extensive rushdown repertoire and flash. He also oozes style and swagger while he’s not a character I would main in a fight, I’d still use him just because of how fun he is. He starts out slightly weaker with less moves, but as he sneaks in a drink mid-fight either manually or with any of his “rekka” chain attacks and follow-ups, he gets access to a divekick, a multi-hit combo-ending breakdance move, and even a command grab that lets you follow up with a hard-hitting combo. Jamie specializes in quick strikes and mixups, but he needs to get his “drink level” to level 4 to unlock his full potential. ![]() The new blood that’s playable in this build includes drunken kungfu guy Jamie and Bushinryu successor Kimberly, each with their new spin on existing fighting game archetypes. Legacy players will get to try out buffed-up iterations of Ryu, Chun-Li, Guile, Juri, and Ken, the latter character being one of the best versions he’s been since Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. Great Character Roster For A Public Trial Runįor a closed beta with limited invites and access, Capcom sure picked some iconic characters and some new ones to go with the limited roster. There are quirks, but hear me out with the following bullet points. Simply put: this is what I really want in a fighting game closed beta session. It launched with less-than-usual features, was rushed out of the gate, and had terrible post-game content for 2 season’s worth, at least for Street Fighter standards.Ĭapcom fighting game guru Takayuki Nakayama and his team knew this going in, and furiously worked hard with part 6 of its fabled fighting franchise to make amends, showing glimpses of this in Street Fighter 5’s season 4 and 5 content.įast forward to now, and Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 closed beta session has come and gone, making every players and fans’ weekend with oodles of gameplay and online fighting. In 2016 and leading up to its release, Street Fighter 5 tainted everybody’s perception of Capcom’s meal ticket fighting game. ![]() This allows development work to progress in parallel and allows for reuse of both sides. to decouple the client side of an application from the server-side.The difficulty of this is dramatically affected by the way the code is structured. to decouple DOM manipulation from application logic. As a result, AngularJS de-emphasized explicit Document Object Model (DOM) manipulation with the goal of improving testability and performance. ![]() The framework adapted and extended traditional HTML to present dynamic content through two-way data-binding that allowed for the automatic synchronization of models and views. While The Force Awakens does feel a little more geared toward solo play (sometimes during co-op the partner will be sat waiting for the character with the required skill to unlock a path) it’s enjoyable nonetheless. I’ve never gotten on with the dynamic split screen so switching back to a vertical split is a godsend. By the halfway point of the story you’ve experienced enough vehicle sections, too, and while they make sense in the story context, from a gameplay perspective you almost want to get back to the good old fashioned LEGO fun.īut what is here is a good time, and its amplified by co-op as usual. The cover shooting sections are used in nearly every level, and after the first few times the cracks start to show, with the imprecise nature of the controls for older players at odds with the locking on for the younger audience. The main issue here is that the new stuff is leaned on too heavily. Whichever way you look at it, this is a good value proposition, with the usual high number of collectibles, characters, gold bricks, red bricks, and more to find before you can honestly say you’ve done everything there is to do. There are also levels that aren’t from the movie which are unlocked with gold bricks and show the lead up to the story of The Force Awakens. Likewise, when Rey finds the lightsaber there’s a puzzle to solve before the story continues. The first stage sees Poe Dameron help the people of Jakku to find their weapons caches so they can attempt to fight back against The First Order, and the second is about Poe and Finn’s escape. Obviously in an effort to not short change you, the story is stretched over multiple levels, but it’s done quite cleverly. Before each story level there are mini hub worlds which you can muck around in, or choose to replay levels in free-play (and thus access secrets with non story-level characters as per usual). Part of the prologue is playing out the final moments of Return of the Jedi (it acts as a tutorial), and at first it seems odd to be playing the old films in this new game, but flying around in the Millennium Falcon is a nice distraction, even if it’s a little squirrely to control. More interesting, though, is that often one of the build options seems unnecessary, and that’s because it’ll lead to a hidden red brick, or another secret. It’s rudimentary and will be more fun for kids than adults, but it’s a nice idea. For example: a three piece water puzzle is solved by creating part one of the multi-build, blowing it back up, moving to part two, blowing it up, then moving to the final part and finishing the puzzle. Most of these are supposed to be done in a certain order. Next, certain builds are now called “Multi-builds” and let you choose from a few different things to create. It is an issue for people wanting a challenge, but if that’s why you’re here, you picked the wrong game. These are quite cool, in fairness, but like much of the series, because there’s no penalty for death (save losing some studs, that is) they aren’t quite as exciting as they could be, despite trying to change it up ever so slightly with different character’s skills. You can move the reticule if you want, but otherwise it’ll auto-lock to the nearest enemy. Pre-defined sections will have cover you hide behind, whereby you hold the left trigger to pop out, and then hammer square (PS4) or right trigger to fire. ![]() Yes, you read that right, and no, I’m not taking the mick. With that all in mind, it’s in the back of my head that people will be reading this to find out what’s new for The Force Awakens (there are new bits), and which games are my favourites (Dimensions, Harry Potter, Star Wars – in that order) so they can check the score and judge if this is for them.įirstly then, what’s new? The most surprising new addition is the cover shooting sections. ![]() LEGO Star Wars was the first game most of us played and loved, and I’ve been heavily critical of the amount of games that have been made with that “LEGO” prefix (almost as annoying as having to capitalise LEGO every time), especially when you get single movies getting their own game, as opposed to the situation with a series like Harry Potter, where six films were dolled out over two games. It feels quite strange, actually, coming back to the game that kickstarted the love affair with this series for us game playing folks. Slowly but surely the minutia has changed, but that formula has largely stayed the same, unless you count LEGO Dimensions (which I thought was superb) and LEGO City Undercover (which was genuinely funny, but suffered from technical issues). You know the drill by now, right? I feel at this point it’s almost pointless trying to pretend otherwise, because the LEGO games have followed a hugely successful formula now a decade now, iterating on popular, culturally significant properties, aimed at adults and children alike. |
